HOW DOES CHP WORK?YANMAR’s Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system uses an internal combustion engine, powered by clean natural gas, to produce both heat and electric power. Because of this high-powered energy collaboration, energy costs are reduced by 20-50%.
CHP applications involve the recovery of wasted engine heat to produce excess thermal energy and electricity. The average efficiency of fossil-fueled power plants in the United States is 33%, compared with YANMAR’s 88% efficiency. Most power produced by traditional fossil fueled plants is wasted in the form of heat discharged into the atmosphere. With YANMAR CHP technology, the heat that is normally lost in the engine’s exhaust system is recovered to provide a useable commodity. The retained excess heat can therefore be used to create hot water for laundry or dish washing, or for space heating, cooling and dehumidification.
It is by combusting natural gas to generate electricity and recover wasted heat that YANMAR’s CHP system is-able-to achieve that 88% total system efficiency. This high efficiency percentage can then be used for its intended purpose –to provide heat and electric power to buildings and other infrastructure.
